Diving in Bajón del Río

The volcanic origin of the Canary Islands means that diving in its waters has unusually shaped rocky seascapes in its depths. This is the case of Bajón del Río; at a depth of 18 metres there is a bottom of golden sand from which parasol shaped volcanic crags several metres high emerge. These “mushrooms” are a refuge for a unique biodiversity. This spot located to the north of the island of Fuerteventura, in the middle of the strait which separates it from the small islet of Lobos, is only five minutes away by boat from the port of Corralejo.

La Atalayita

The settlement of La Atalayita is in the Valle de Pozo Negro, in the east of Fuerteventura. This archaeological site dates back to the times of the island’s first natives, called ‘mahos’ or ‘majos’. Nowadays, the Visitor Centre allows us to enter constructions that are over six centuries old. It is exciting to discover the history of this settlement, which was used as a night-time refuge, shelter from the elements and somewhere to hide from attacks. We recommend climbing the peak to get an extraordinary panoramic view of the settlement.

Village of Antigua

There are towns whose cultural legacy speaks to us of splendours past. So it is in the case of Antigua, in the flat central part of Fuerteventura: its centre attests to an historic and artistic heritage of great worth, which is reflected in its architecture. But if one thing in particular defines Antigua’s countryside it is the windmills that break up the flat landscape with the blades, just like bygone times, moved by the gentle, warm, trade winds.

Betancuria Old Town

Located in the mid-west of the island of Fuerteventura, Betancuria is one of the most important colonial landmarks in the history of the Canary Islands. Founded in 1404 by the Norman Knight Jean de Bethencourt, the town's location was chosen for its secluded inland position to offer a better defence against pirate attacks. The town reached its peak in the 18th Century due to its abundant dry crop harvests. Today the entire local economy depends on tourism.

Jandía Nature Reserve (from the port in Gran Tarajal)

The island of Fuerteventura is located between Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. With a surface area of 1658 square kilometres, it is the oldest of the seven Canary Islands and also the least populated, with barely seventy thousand inhabitants. More of a business and service city than a tourist destination, Gran Tarajal is in the municipality of Tuineje, on the east coast. Jandía Nature Reserve has been a protected desert area since 1987, with plant species such as giant cacti and euphorbia and about 40 species of protected animals.
