Salt Museum

Learn how salt is extracted from the sea

The Salt Museum, in the west of Fuerteventura, lets visitors see how salt was traditionally extracted from sea water before being converted into a common kitchen ingredient. The museum is located next to Caleta de Fuste, where the first salt fields in the island were built several centuries ago. The white walls of the building and the impressive whale skeleton beside it are the tell-tale signs that you have found this fascinating museum.

Visit the salt fields of Fuerteventura

The museum is divided into two parts: the first is an indoor exhibition with information panels and projections. Outside, visitors can walk through the original salt fields, still operational, and see the traditional methods at work and how the most common of kitchen condiments is obtained. A cafeteria and a shop are also situated on-site, where you can buy salt produced in the museum itself.
