Centro de Arte Juan Ismael

This art centre has an unassuming exterior but the interior is special with a balcony on the first floor with a panoramic view of the port of Puerto del Rosario. The gallery pays homage to the modernist painter from Fuerteventura who was a great exponent of surrealism and avant-garde poetry until his death in 1981. In addition to the modernist painter, there is work from contemporary artists from the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. There are different exhibition halls with permanent and temporary exhibitions. In the learning institute art workshops and conferences are organised.

Cementerio Marino de Cofete

It’s unusual for a cemetery to be surrounded by the ocean. This resting place for the dead has been integrated seamlessly into the sand and stones of the local area. In the doorway there are some memorial objects and a plaque counting the deceased. The beauty of the area makes it easy to see why the native inhabitants of Fuerteventura chose the beach as a cemetery. During the 19th century, the first inhabitants lifted corpses on to the backs of camels and transported them in a funeral procession for about 40km to arrive at the beach cemetery.

Unamuno House Museum

Miguel de Unamuno’s house is in the old part of Puerto de Cabras. This is the place where the writer was welcomed after being exiled by Primo de Rivera in 1924. Miguel de Unamuno travelled around Fuerteventura for almost half a year. He was inspired by and reflected on the beauty of the local area in articles and sonnets. His old house has become a museum where visitors can admire a typical bourgeois family home in Fuerteventura with luxury items such as a phonograph and typewriter.

Betancuria Old Town

Located in the mid-west of the island of Fuerteventura, Betancuria is one of the most important colonial landmarks in the history of the Canary Islands. Founded in 1404 by the Norman Knight Jean de Bethencourt, the town's location was chosen for its secluded inland position to offer a better defence against pirate attacks. The town reached its peak in the 18th Century due to its abundant dry crop harvests. Today the entire local economy depends on tourism.

Scuba diving in Veril Grande

In the south of Fuerteventura, in front of the Jandia lighthouse, a spectacular enclave known as the Veril Grande can be found that is perfect for divers of all levels. At a depth of 20 metres, the top of the wall drops vertically to about 40 metres and hidden species like bream, black eels, stingrays and angel sharks emerge. Just before reaching the shelf, garden eels can also be seen. Occasionally, large deep-sea fish like whale sharks and giant devil rays have been sighted.

Calderón Hondo

The Calderón Hondo is one of the best-preserved craters in Fuerteventura. The volcanic formation lies to the east of the road that leaves Lajares, (municipality of La Oliva) in the direction of Majanicho. Fuerteventura is 30 million years old, so the eruption on the Calderón Hondo – which occurred between 50,000 years and 130,000 years ago – happened relatively recently in the island’s past. Calderón Hondo – together with Bayuyo, Las Calderas, and La Caldera de Lobos – is arranged in a direction northeast to southwest in Fuerteventura. Evidence of volcanic eruptions are found in the island badlands, terrain which can’t be cultivated to this day. The volcanos also created geographical features such as the Lobos islet, the town of El Cotillo, and the sandy extension south of Lajares.
